Pews Are All Being Replaced By Chairs

By Janice Thorton-Hayes

30 years ago, when the family went to church, you sat in a pew. That was the one thing special about going to church. You sat in a pew. And these giant wood benches weren't made to be comfy, they were made to last for a thousand years and seat a lot of people. They were usually made out of solid wood and of very high quality materials.

In current day, churches don't have pews they have nice little chairs. This entire change in worship seating a slow change that is continuing today all over the nation, churches everywhere are changing from the old pew seating design and new churches don't have to order and install pews, they just buy a bunch of chairs.

It's funny. The change from pews to chairs is kind of similar to some of the changes houses of worship have gone through over the last 30 years, especially the Catholic church. Many things have become more relaxed, more "real" and more focused upon accommodating the church members. The whole seating design in churches has become more lax and interaction has become less formal, the whole family used to have to get dressed up to go to church.

If you really look at the difference between chairs and pews it is easy to see why church chairs are more practical. Chairs can be rearranged, used to create small groups, etc., easy to move around, they stack, they are cheaper to ship, they are even less expensive to manufacture.

People, as a whole, move around more also. Churches sprout up and then disappear after a few years a lot. As the Christian, non-denominational and "born again" Evangelicals continue to grow, members can become a Pastor quickly, and they can then go off and start up a "seed" church pretty quickly and easily.
